La Pagode
Sometimes you find some for Paris surprising architectures. Here is an example of an oriental looking pagoda, which actually is a cinema, logically called “La Pagode”.
It’s a bit “hidden” in an area of Paris which is not so much spontaneously visited by cinema-goers (57 bis, rue de Babylone, 7th) - not far from the Rodin Museum. It was built some more than 100 years ago and first used as a private ballroom, later made public. In the 1930’s it was transformed to a cinema.
During the 1970’s it became rather an art movie theatre. In the 90’s its future seemed quite dark, but it has in the meantime been officially “classified” and the present owner has an obligation to keep it as a cinema. The films showed now are “normal” ones, not necessarily art movies.
There is a lot of renovation work needed and partly ongoing and you can see some plastic covers on the roof. There is a small garden in front of the building, which was open when I passed. The grey weather and the naked trees made the pictures a bit dull, but on the other hand it made the building more easily visible and I had no shadow problems.
The movies proposed when I passed did not incite me to pay a ticket and I was not sure to be able or allowed to take any pictures inside anyhow – a pity as the major theatre (a smaller more modern one has been added) is quite spectacular. I show you instead a picture “stolen” on Google.

Peter, we lived à deux pas
from La Pagode! At the time, they did offer a nice mixture of art and main stream films. We loved the place! The seats are very comfortable and they had a cute usherette (whom you had to tip ;-))
wooo ... the interior is awesome!
Peut-on parler d'art nouveau ici ?
The building is so beautiful!
That is a long life for a cinema! Here in Finland they have had the obsession to close all old cinemas and build new, huge entertainment centres with no atmosphere at all.
Merci !
Old world charm :)
Fantastic!
It is a nice building and lots of nice things around the area. I like the photo of the lamp as much as anything. It is a reminder I need to post the lanterns in Lord Date Masamume's sacred grounds. That would be on my Sendai-shi blogspot blog.
the interior inside is a lil bit too much for normal cinema, i guess..
Now that looks like a bookmark! They need to be showing "Les Enfants du Paradis" or something though...
As I said in French before SusuPetal said anything, I agree with her.
isabella:
I think thet the "usherettes" are not around any more, sorry!
lyliane:
azer:
(Wonderful to write your name when you have azerty key board.)
Yes, but the outside is quite spectacular too although needing some refreshing.
alice:
Je n'avoue rien!
hpy:
delphinium:
Ta référence à Tim Burton me plait!
suspetal:
Same here, but there are a few exceptions, fortunately!
nathalie:
ash:
Thanks for your always warm and kind comments!
oldmanlincoln:
I will check your Japanese blog again!
drama div@:
The "too much" is typical for the period when it was built!
richard:
You may be right, but they have to try to fill the 400 seats several times per day, so maybe they have to show something more actual.
hpy (again):
Nice to see that you are in complete agreement with your (our) friend susuPetal!
Wow Peter,it look awesome to me, especially the interior.I thought Pagoda is only in oriental country like Japan...
It's not as run down as the place in my pic today, which I think you didn't like.
It wasn't exactly PRETTY. But somehow photogenic to me. :)
