Sainte Marie des Batignolles

The other day I took a picture of the newly confirmed girls and boys outside our catholic parish church, Sainte Marie des Batignolles. It’s definitely not one of the more famous churches in Paris.

Yesterday I had a look inside. I wanted more especially to see their concert program (most churches offer frequently good concerts, mostly free of charge).

I was in particular struck by the sculpture of St. Mary above the altar. It reminded me, especially colour wise, of some Wedgwood biscuit. I could not find any more detailed information about who created it.

The church was first built as a small chapel in 1826. It was extended to its present shape in 1851. Built more or less in the shape of a Greek temple, it’s one of the few Paris churches without a real tower. There is a small bell on the top, still indicating the hours of the day.

Wedgwood vase.

It almost looks like a Greek temple. You didn't find any infromation inside the church? We often can find little booklets or brochurs inside which you can buy for a small amount.

April:
There was a small booklet, but not more info than what I gave you. I tried Internet, but nothing more... If I go back I may find somebody to ask, but when I went I was the only visitor.

Cergie:

Bonjour Peter! Thank you for visiting my blog. I knew how to make a collage with four photos with Photofiltre, but for many photos like today, I used Picasa which makes it automatically! I'd be happy if I can help you, let me know. Have a nice Sunday!

This chapel is beautiful! LOVE the sculpture too. I've never seen any kind of that in person. Just seen them in TV.

I saw your comment on another blog about "patchworks" or collages. Subscribe to free Picasa and it's easy as can be and lots of fun to make collages. I've done a few and posted them already and am quite satisfied with the results. Good luck. PS. The stained glass windows are bright and beautiful.

The stained glasswork in churches is always so admirable. But I have seen some fascinating modern ones too!

The church is indeed like a Greek Temple! & so is White House I guess!
