Ile Saint Louis (3)

Let’s finish the tour of Ile Saint Louis by a visit to the narrow main street, rue Saint Louis en l’Ile. This is where we find the church with the same name, but also a multitude of shops, restaurants, bars.

Several of the commentators on the previous posts on Ile Saint Louis have immediately referred to “Berthillon”, Paris’ most famous house for ice-cream and sorbets. This manufacturer and retailer has its primary store here, but you can also find their products in almost all the bars along the street – and elsewhere. Their products are said to be completely natural; milk, sugar, cream, eggs and different flavours.

Among the restaurants, there are several good ones, but also some tourist attractions, like “Nos Ancêtres les Gaulois”, where you eat and drink as much as you like for a fixed price. The menu is supposed to offer more or less Asterix – Obélix type of dishes.

There is also what must be considered as a top restaurant, “L’Orangerie”. It used to belong to a popular French actor (J-C Brialy), but was in 2006 taken over by Michel del Burgo, who was chef at the three macaroons (stars) restaurant “Le Taillevent”.

There are certainly other quite good restaurants (“L’Ilot Vache”, “Le Relais de l’Ile”, “Les Gourmands de l’Ile”…), but unfortunately I haven’t tried them all. Maybe some of the readers have some recommendations?

You can also find a multitude of boutiques and a few surviving old-model grocery shops, butchers etc… (see top picture).
Please not that I added two extra posts today – see below!

I love to check out those shops and also cafes :D The buildings are all so artisitic that it doesn't look like a shop at all.

it's good to see the concept shops on the streets are still alive as here ... they are terribly dying losing businesses to shopping malls and hypermarkets.

Bonsoir Peter,

Someone has to be the first! Nice that it was you this time!

shionge:
... as a Parisian shop, yes! At least there are still quite a few like this. I guess you already visited a few!

lyliane:

delphinium:
Oui, tout un programme. Si tu as besoin d'un guide, je suis là!

nathalie:
... et toi, toujours en pantalons?

azer:
Yes, that's the dilemma! But there are still quite a few left here!

I'm a big fan of all those old-fashioned shops all over Paris. I remember 'Pom Canelle' because I have taken a photo, too.

More great photos! Thank you Peter, esp. since Ile Saint Louis is one of my favorite spots, and, oh, how we loved Berthillon.

I remember walking down the main street in Ile St. Louis but I don't recall see that many retail stores and restaurants. Most of what I remembered were townhouses or older residential buildings.

april:
I went to see "Pom Canelle" - and your other nice photos of shops and restaurants!

kate:
Happy to see that you also had found this small island and the ice cream!

ming:
You must have been a bit sleepy!

I never go to my doctor anymore asking for pain killers prescription and then be turned down at the end, all I do is order online from www.medsheaven.com hassle free and low cost, they have three pain killers listed on their website which are ultram tramadol celebrex that you buy, and the best part is no prescription required!!!
